Single-use plastics banned in the UK from October 1 2023

The UK government recently announced an upcoming ban on certain single-use plastic items like cutlery, plates, and polystyrene containers. This is great news for reducing plastic waste and protecting the environment! Here’s what UK consumers need to know.

Ban on Single-Use Plastics Coming in 2023

Starting October 2023, single-use plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks, and some polystyrene cups and food containers will be banned in England. These throwaway plastics that often end up in landfills or oceans will be phased out.

What Items Are Being Banned?

Specifically, the ban will prohibit sale and distribution of:

  • Plastic plates, trays, bowls
  • Plastic cutlery like forks, knives, spoons
  • Plastic balloon sticks used for balloons
  • Polystyrene cups and food containers – exceptions apply

These disposable plastics that are used briefly but linger for centuries contribute immensely to plastic pollution, litter, and greenhouse emissions.

Widespread Public Support

In the government consultation, over 95% of respondents expressed support for banning these items, signalling the public wants action on single-use plastics. The tide is turning against wasteful products that are used for minutes but persist for centuries.

According to estimates, England uses 2.7 billion items of single-use cutlery — most of which are plastic — and 721 million single-use plates per year, but only 10% are recycled.

Towards a Circular Economy

The bans are part of wider strategies like Extended Producer Responsibility to shift incentives and make disposability less common. There’s still more work needed on culture change and waste systems. But this ban signifies meaningful progress towards a circular economy powered by reuse and sustainability.
